Local people from Myoma Kayoungdan (Sekda para) village surrounded traffic police personnel while they tried to extort and harass a religious leader who was riding a motorcycle, on the evening of February 25, according to a teacher from Maungdaw.

“Local people blocked the traffic police personnel when the police stopped and tried to arrest a religious leader and take him to their station. When the locals surrounded the police personnel they left the motorbike and rider and escaped,” he said.

The driver was Moluna Mohamed Hamid, from Maungdaw south.

“The traffic police personnel from Maungdaw traffic police station have been harassing and extorting money from young Rohingyas riding motorcycles for a long time and now the traffic police started to harass and extort money from a Rohingya religious leader,” said a student from Maungdaw.

“The police didn’t take such action against the Rakhine community,”a source said.

The traffic police station is controlled by Assistant Inspector Thaung Hay.
