Ukiah, Bangladesh: A woman was killed and two of her relatives were seriously injured with a knife in the Kutupalong makeshift camp by a man locals describe as a drug addict on the night of February 15, a refugee elder from the camp said.

Rafique Uddin – an unregistered refugee from Kutupalong refugee camp – was listening to music with a mobile phone near his shack at around 10:00pm when Jafar Alam (25), son of Ulla Meah, approached him and tried to snatch his mobile phone, the elder added.

Rafique screamed and called a family member for help to save his mobile. Rafique’s mother, Azeda, (40) tried to save her son and his mobile but she was stabbed by Jafor and died on the spot, according to other refugees.

“Mamataz Meah, the father of Rafique, went to the spot after hearing the screams of his family member where he was also stabbed by Jafor, who ran away while nearby refugees rushed to the spot,” according to the source.

Rafique and Mamtaz were seriously injured. They were admitted to the Shamak Hospital in Cox’s Bazar.
Azeda’s body was sent to the government hospital of Cox’s Bazar for an autopsy. She was buried at the refugee cemetery on February 16, a relative of the victims said.

The son in law of Azeda filed a case against Jafor at the Ukhiya Police Station.

Jafor was arrested on February 16 and sent to the Ukhiya Police Station.

Jalal Uddin, of the official Kutupalong camp confirmed the incident occurred in the makeshift camp.
