Kutupalong, Bangladesh: A group of local youths from Kutupalong is brazenly looting unregistered Rohingya refugees, said an elder refugee from Kutupalong Refugee Camp.

“The group is led by Afsar, son of Shuna Ali, hailing from the Kutupalong area. The group enters the refugee camp with fake 500 Taka notes and buys goods from the refugees’ shops.”

“If the refugee shopkeepers refuse to accept the fake notes, the local youths simple take the goods.”

“The local youths also looted and took chickens from refugees in the day time. If the owner of the chickens tries to stop the youths, the group beats the refugees. We are facing big problems to complain about the fake bank notes to the concerned camp security forces as the fake notes are in our hands, and we have no evidence that they were paid to us by local youths,” said a refugee shopkeeper from the camp.

“The camp security police do not bar the youths who enter into the camp and make problems with fake money. Instead, they harass and extort money from refugees at every opportunity.”

“We are not registered in Bangladesh as refugees, so every local can enter the camp where they harass, loot, and rape the refugees without any fear of arrest. The police also do not protect the refugees when we face problems,” said a religious leader from the camp.
