“Plain clothes policemen went to Mawgu’s shack to arrest him,” the elder said. “They used false allegations to extort money. Magwu’s wife and his daughter, along with other female refugees, attacked the policemen for not showing an arrest warrant and for not wearing uniforms, on December 3 at about 9:00pm.”

“The policemen who had been attacked returned wearing uniforms the morning of December 4," the elder continued. "They searched Mawgu’s shack and beat his wife and daughter when they discovered Mawgu was absent.”

The police also set fire to the man’s hut and destroyed both it and the belongings inside.

“Both women were seriously injured by the police and are receiving treatment at the MSF clinic,” said a female refugee living nearby.

Sources believe the police were working hand in hand with Police Inspector Jawnail to extort money from refugees in the camp.

“We fled from our homeland to escape discrimination and harassment by the Burmese authority. Here, we also are facing same in the camp as we did inside Arakan,” offered and unnamed source.
