Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar: A wild elephant entered the Kutupalong makeshift camp and destroyed some refugees’ huts in early morning hours today. The dwellings had been constructed by the inhabitants, using plastic as well as materials from the forest, a refugee from the camp told Kaladan.

“The elephant came around 4:30 in the morning and stayed for half an hour, when most of the us were asleep,” the refugee said.

Some residents woke up due to the noise and commotion and fled from the immediate area where the huts were. The refugees screamed for help and at the beast to drive it away from the camp.

At that point, the elephant moved away from the camp and, luckily, no one was attacked or injured by the animal during the incident.

There have been other less fortunate encounters. On October 5, a 22 year-old Rohingya man named Anwar Hussain, son of the late Nurul Hage, went into the Modor Sara forest to collect firewood after eating. Wild elephants inhabit the Modor Sara. While returning home, he was unexpectedly trampled to death by an elephant, according to a friend who was with him at the time.

The friend also noted that Hussain lived with his family at Foliya Para in Bnagladesh after fleeing from Burma.
