Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar: A wild elephant killed a Rohingya youth at Raja Palong union under Ukhiya police station of Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh while returning home after collecting fire wood in nearby forest of Modor Sara on October 5, at about 11:00 am, according to local villager named Zalil .

“The deceased was identified as Anwar Hussain (22), son of late Nurul Hage, hailed from Foliya Para, under Raja Palong union of Cox’s Bazar district. He has been living here since 10 years ago after fleeing from Burma with his parents.”

Yesterday at about 9:00 am, he went to Modor Sara forest for collecting fire wood after having food. Modor Sara is a deep forest where wild elephants are living. After collecting fire wood, he was returning home, but on the way he met with a wild elephant. Suddenly, the wild elephant attacked him and trampled with its legs to death, according to a friend of the victim who also went to the forest for collecting fire wood.

However, other fire wood cutters managed to escape the attack. The elephant left the scene after being chased by other fire wood cutters.

On information, the body was recovered by the Ukhiya police and sent to the Hospital Morgue for autopsies.

The body was buried on that evening in the local Cemetery after being delivered from the hospital.

Prior to this incident, many villagers in rural areas have been killed by wild elephants. The elephants have been disturbing the rural villagers because of deforestation and increasing scarcity of food for the elephants. The elephants approach villages near the forest in search of food, said a local villager.

A local villager said,” Once I was attacked by a wild elephant in my village, but luckily I managed to escape.”
