Teknaf, Bangladesh: The Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) seized nearly 2,000 Yaba (methamphetamine) and other drugs from two peddlers on September 29, on Bangladesh-Burma border, said an aide of Teknaf police station requesting not to be named.

A group of BGB personnel from 42-Battalion of Teknaf seized 800-Yaba from Dom Dom Meah BGB check-post from a car while going to Cox’s Bazar from Teknaf, where the BGB arrested Manik Meah (16), son of Rahim Ullah, hailed from Shapuri Dip of Teknaf  on September 29.”

Similarly another group of BGB personnel of Whaikong BGB check-post also seized 1,118-Yaba from a passenger’s bus while it was going to Cox’s Bazar from Teknaf  on same day and arrested  Ayub (20), son of late Lal Meah, hailed from Sikdar Para of Nila union, said a local  trader from Whaikong who denied to be named.

The two arrested Yaba peddlers had been handed over to Teknaf police station for further interrogations, according to BGB official source.

Besides, the BGB personnel also seized 32-bottle of foreign wine from Nazir Para (village) of Sabran union nearby Bangladesh-Burma border. These Yabas and wines come from Burma in daily basis though the concerned authorities such as ---BGB, RAB (Rapid Action Battalion), police and other intelligent departments--- have been trying to stop the narcotic smuggling across the border since long, said a local elder preferring not to be named.

A local elder from Teknaf said, “It is not possible to stop the smuggling of Yaba and other narcotic drugs from Burma until and unless, at first, the authorities of Burma have to wipe out all the narcotic dealers in Burma side.”

The Bangladesh authority will hold talks with Burma on October 23 to 24 next to stop smuggling of Yaba (methamphetamine) and other drugs, said Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun while speaking at a workshop as the chief guest in the conference room of Narcotic Control Department (NCD).

The Home Minister called upon all to form anti-drug organization in each area and raise campaign against drug to create awareness among the people.

"One might die in a gun attack while a total family becomes ruined in the attack of illegal drugs," Home Minister continued.

"We have lost Taka 200,000 million each year for purchasing illegal drugs and the number of addicted people in the country is now stands at 46 million"  according to Home Secretary.
