Teknaf, Bangladesh: Yaba tablets are being smuggled to Bangladesh from Burma like flood water from the Teknaf land-port and other porous border points of Burma-Bangladesh. Over 80 million Taka worth of Yaba tablets are being smuggled to Bangladesh from Burma, annually, said a man from border area who always surveys the situation of Yaba smuggling.

Bangladesh Coastguards seized 900 Yaba (methamphetamine) tablets at border on September 11, which the coastguards handed over to police, but smugglers escaped seeing the Coastguards after throwing the Yaba tablets, official said.

Mohmed Jalal (32), of Teknaf union, a Bangladeshi youth was arrested with 300 Yaba tablets from Dum Dum Meah check-post on September 10, while he was going to Cox’s Bazar from Teknaf by Special Mini bus.

Similarly, on August 29, Sub-inspector (SI) police officer Gobindaw Shok Dasah seized 750 Yaba tablets and arrested three persons with one motor cycle and five mobile sets at Innani,” the Yaba survey group said.

“Besides, on May 19, from Chowdury Para of Court Bazar under Cox’s Bazar district, two persons from Teknaf were arrested with a Land Cruiser jeep and 40,000 Yaba tablets by Ukhiya police.

“Last month, 15 smugglers with 55,000 Yaba tablets were arrested by the authorities from Ukhia and Teknaf border areas. Besides, from the Burma- Bangladesh border, heroine is also being smuggled to Bangladesh daily. Some of the local people are actively giving cooperation with the smugglers.”

May be, some of the police authorities are involved in the Yaba smuggling in Burma-Bangladesh border, otherwise it will be stopped. So the local people do not dare to give complaint to the concerned authorities, said a schoolteacher from border area preferring not to be named.

But the police super Shutraw Dar Tripura said that though the police seized thousands of Yaba tablet worth of Taka a number of million, but smugglings of Yaba tablet to Bangladesh from Burma are not stopped. It is necessary to joint local people and journalists with the authorities concerned to prevent the smuggling.

Teknaf, the tourist town of Bangladesh –Burma border, where most of the Bangladeshi people visit frequently with their family in latest model of private cars carried Yaba tablets in their return trip and sent it across the country, said a local elder from Teknaf who denied to be named.

Sometimes, the BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) and police arrested the smugglers of Yaba tablets, but they are not the main smugglers or bosses. They are living out of the reach of police and BGB, said a trader from Cox’s bazaar on condition of anonymity.

In Burma also, the authorities mainly Nasaka (Burma’s border security officer), police, Sarapa (Military intelligence), and some of the officers of the Maungdaw town are involved in illegal narcotic trafficking. Until and unless these men are retire from the smuggling, the flow of Yaba tablets will be continued, said a businessman from Maungdaw Town.
