Kutupalong, Bangladesh: One unregistered refugee child was killed in torrential rain with strong winds followed by landslides, which destroyed more than 30 huts yesterday in the Kutupalong unregistered camp, said a refugee elder from the camp.

The landslide from the top of the hill destroyed the mud walls of huts built on the hillside, he said.

Heavy rainfall has continued along the border area for four days, said another refugee from Kutupalong camp.

“Heavy rain and gusty winds are destroying the shacks where most refugees live in the Kutupalong unregistered makeshift camp.”

The dead child has been identified as Romena Akter, age 8, daughter of the late Dil Mohamed of the unregistered refugee camp.

According to a refugee source, some refugees have received minor injuries during the severe weather.

“Now we are unable to rebuild out huts as we have no money or food,” said a refugee committee member. “We are unable to go to work because of attacks by local people.”
