Maungdaw, Arakan State: Maungdaw police personnel erected a new campaign billboard announcing that gambling is not allowed in Maungdaw yesterday, said an aide from the district police office.

“On the billboard, the police announce that if anyone sees any gambling in the area of Maungdaw, they should contact the police. Two telephone numbers to contact the security personnel are listed.”

Myo Win, the head of district police force, told the people of Maungdaw, “Gambling destroys the situation of families, and it is not a good habit for human beings.”

“We take action after getting information about gambling and request the people to cooperate with the police force.”

“The police force erected campaign billboards about ‘no gambling in Maungdaw’ at two places. One is in the Maungdaw municipal market, and the other one is at the Myoma Kyayoungdan junction,” said an elder from Maungdaw.

“Most of the gambling is done by the residents of the Rakhine community area, but police only arrest members of the Rohingya community. The main gambling agents are one retired police officer, one Luntin (para-military force) who is still staying and running his business from the police line stall, and several teashop owners.”

“These gambling agents are controlling the Chay (a game played with two or three numbers), and most the gamblers are daily laborers and young people.”

Yesterday, the police arrested three Rohingya from Bomo Para Village for gambling in the village after the villagers informed the police, said a student from the said village.
