Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burma’s border security force, or Nasaka, officials are harassing the local people to provide workers for their project in Maungdaw South Nasaka Area No. 7, said a local elder.

“The Nasaka officials come every night in the Rohingya villages in the Nasaka Area No. 7, and the Nasaka personnel are checking the family lists of each household.”

“If the Nasaka finds any family member absent while they are checking the list, the absentee is summoned to their camp.”

“The local people who have gone to the camp were ordered to work on projects for the Nasaka, such as constructing buildings in their camp.”

The project to build buildings in the camp was started by higher officials with funds, but Commanding Officer Major Sein Win is looking to use the local people as free labor, according to an aide of the Nasaka.

“Every day, the Nasaka calls ten to fifteen local people to their camp and orders them to work in the construction of buildings in the camp. This has been going on now for more than fifteen days.”

“If someone has gone for religious purposes out of the village, the Nasaka calls the female who is the head of the family. The Nasaka asks her to pay money to hire a worker on behalf of her family.”

“Most of the local people aren’t able to go Maungdaw because of the harassment of the Nasaka,” said a shopkeeper from Maungdaw South.

The order was issued in Nasaka Area No. 7 by the Commanding Officer Major Sein Win.
