Maungdaw, Arakan State: An officer of the Nasaka, Burma’s border security force, of Taungbro left Nasaka camp under Nasaka Area No. 3 of Maungdaw Township and died on April 16 in the Naff River, said a local from the locality who declined to be named.

On April15, the officer was participating in the water festival, but at night he was consumed an excessive amount of alcohol and became unconscious. He jumped to the upper Naff River nearby the camp at night. He was also disappointed with his uncle’s wife, who is a Sarapa (Military intelligence) officer working in the camp, a source close to the Nasaka said.

Another source from the area said that at night, after drinking alcohol, the officer quarreled with his companions and was severely beaten up.

On the morning of April 16, the dead body was floating in the river and found by local villagers who informed the authorities at the Nasaka camp. Immediately, a group of Nasaka came to the spot and brought the body to the camp.

The body was immediately taken to Maungdaw Hospital from the camp by an engine boat of Maung Myint, alias Imam Hussain, for an autopsy.

In the Nasaka camp, the family members of the Nasaka personnel have been undergoing training for sentry duty in the camp, as there is currently a shortage of Nasaka forces, as many members of the army and the Nasaka have been transferred to Shan State where there has been fighting between government forces and Shan rebel groups, said another source close to the Nasaka.

“The name of the Nasaka will soon be changed to a new name, and Nasaka personnel who reach age 40 will be retired.”
