Ukhiya, Cox's Bazaar: Another flag meeting was held between the Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) and Burma’s border security force (Nasaka) on March 31 at the zero line of the Burma-Bangladesh border at Taungbro with the aim of exchanging cows that were stolen by villagers from both sides recently, said a source close to the BGB.

The meeting was expected to help bring about peace and stability along the border between the two countries, said a BGB official.

The problem along the Burma-Bangladesh border has erupted because some of the villagers from the Burma side stole a cow from Bangladesh three weeks ago, and as reprisal on March 30, some of the villagers of Bangladesh also stole a cow from Burma side.

Regarding the matter, there was correspondence between the Commander of the BGB Battalion of Taungbro and the Commander of Nasaka Area No. 3 of Maungdaw Township.

As a result, the flag meeting was held today at about 9 a.m. between the Nasaka and the BGB at the zero line nearby border pillar No. 34 of the Burma-Bangladesh border near Taungbro Sub-township of Maungdaw Township, the BGB aide added.

“Police officer U Htay Aung of Nasaka Area No. 3 led the Burmese delegation, while Naif Sofador Mujamel Hussain, the Company Commander of Gongdaung BGB Camp, led the Bangladeshi group.”

Security forces were deployed from both sides during the meeting. This time, the Nasaka were wearing combat suits as they recently changed their uniforms to combat suits, and their arms were also upgraded starting from March 27.

After the meeting, the Nasaka handed over a cow to the BGB, and the BGB also handed over a cow to the Nasaka. The meeting came to an end at about 12:30 p.m., the aide said.

In addition, the Director of BGB Major General Rofiqul Islam, accompanied by other officers, also visited Maungdaw Town yesterday and returned to Bangladesh with a businessman, aged 40, who was arrested in Burma recently. He went to Burma for business purposes.

“Maybe the BGB director has other reasons to visit Burma, but nobody knows them,” a Nasaka aide from Maungdaw speculated.
