The
police force in Kachin State, northern Burma is gearing up for the 2010 general
elections. Police personnel are into training and parades in the
Nyein-Chan-Tar-Yar sport stadium in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State
since October 22, a source said.

The
police exercises will continue for three days. Officials from each quarter or
village in the town have to be present during the exercises at the stadium
ground in rotation to cheer and support the police personnel, said a local
official.

All
the officers and government staff from different departments such as the Red
Cross, Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA) and Reserved Fire
Brigade have to report to the stadium ground to cheer, he added.

Most
of the training is related to counter, arrest and beat up mass demonstrators
and tackle riotous situations, according to a participant.

"On
the first day of the training a police officer, however, said during his speech
that the exercise and training was mainly to gear up the police for the 2010
general elections. It is to prepare the police personnel to tackle riots if any
during the polls and to control any untoward situation," a participant
told KNG.

The
officer also said not only will the police force be involved during riots but
all the citizens will also be responsible and it is advised that they all take
part, he added.

Currently,
there are policemen in every street corner guarding and patrolling day and
night in a situation where security has been beefed up, local an eye witness
said.
