The Myanmar Institute of Theology (MIT) marked the 6th anniversary of MIT Sunday on September 21 and interacted with churches in Rangoon, a source said.

MIT students were divided into separate groups with three or four students along with a MIT lecturer visiting churches and interacting, said a MIT student.

The MIT has been celebrating its anniversary on the third Sunday of September as of 2003, a student added.

MIT was originally called the Willis and Orlinda Pierce Divinity School and was founded in June 1927, on Seminary Hill, in Insein Township, Rangoon. Currently it offers various courses such as D.Min (Doctor of Ministry), M.Th (Master of Theology), MACS (Master of Arts in Christian Studies), M. Div (Master of Divinity), MTS (Master of Theological Studies) and BARS (Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies).

MIT is catering to 986 students in the 2008-2009 academic year and they come from different ethnic groups and religions in Burma.

The MIT was closed on October last year by the Burmese military junta which was apprehensive that hundreds from the student community would join the widespread September demonstrations. It was reopened later.
