Flouting its own order, which bans fishing in the Danai River in Hukawng Valley in Kachin State, northern Burma, the Burmese military junta authorities have been fishing, using dynamites in the Danai and its streamlets, a source said.

The Burmese military department of fisheries and the Jadeland Myanmar Company limited in Kachin State had banned fishing in the streamlets of Danai (Tanai) Township and Shingbwi Yang Township. They had declared that they would take action if the order was flouted.

Despite issuing such an order, the Burmese military junta authorities are violating it and have been cooperating with fishermen from lower Burma and marketing the fish in the gold mining areas in Hugawng (Hukawng) Valley, said a local.

"They can sell the fish in various gold mining areas in Hugawng valley because there are over hundreds of thousands of people living there," said a resident from Myitkyina who recently came from the area.

Between 1000 and 2000 vises of fish from the Danai River are caught everyday and fishing will continue in these areas because there is a big market for it.
