With the onset of summer and the new school session in the offing, the Burmese military junta has commenced compiling lists of illiterate citizens and children who cannot afford to attend the government school in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State in northern Burma, a source said.

School teachers in Myitkyina have been ordered by the township education minister to compile the list in every quarter in town and submit it to the minister's office by April 15, said a school teacher.

"We have to compile the list based on age and we started work on the list yesterday. We are compiling the list of children of ages between 5 and 14, who should get formal education. Others in the list are between the ages of 15 and 25, 25 and 45 and over 45," a school teacher told KNG.

"We have to collect the list each summer and teach illiterate citizens in keeping with the order. For children whose parents cannot afford to send them to school, the government will provide support when the schools open for the new session," she added.

Meanwhile, teachers in a quarter have to send a list of teachers to the quarter office on the orders of the township administration office.
