An unusual yellow rain fell for the second straight day today in Mai Ja Yang, one of the two major towns under the control of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) in Kachin State, Northern Burma, said residents.

Clear yellow spots marked the ground. Eyewitnesses saw them on the roofs of houses and on tree leaves after the rain had stopped.

So far, neither KIO authorities nor residents know what caused this but are extremely worried, wondering whether it was acid rain or whether it had another origin, a resident told the Kachin News Group on Monday.

“We have never seen such yellow rain before. We think it could be fallout from the war zone as the Burmese Army and KIO troops are fighting each other, about 20 miles from here,” a resident said.

The rain fell for two minutes in a paste-like form unlike rainwater. It covered over 30 square meters and it rained irregularly in the town, said eyewitnesses.
