Monks who live in Pegu (Bago), where the largest numbers of monks reside are under restriction a year after their protests against the Burmese junta. Three monks were arrested when they were in Shwe Maw Daw pagoda.

According to a former State Sangha Maha Nayaka Sayardaw, three Buddhist monks who were visiting the Shwe Maw Daw Pagoda were arrested.

"We don't know yet which temple they are from. But they were arrested because they flouted the order of not to going out at night" Sayardaw said.

According to the Sayardaw, the monks are under restriction because they protested last September.

Two days ago, each temple in Pegu town was sent a letter to register their guests at the authorities.

"They sent the order to our monastery two days ago. The letter states we need to report the number of guests sleeping in our monastery and where they come from," a monk said.

"It is difficult to report the number of guests because many people who have taken Buddha preset are sleeping in the temple," the monk explained.

In September 2007, after the 88' student generation leaders started peaceful demonstrations against the fuel price hike, thousands of monks joined them against the military regime. But the Burmese military government resorted to a bloody crackdown on the monks. Some monks were killed and many disrobed.
