The referendum commission of Mudon Township , Mon state has launched its campaign in the villages as of yesterday, said village leaders who attended the campaign meeting.
 
Five people claiming to comprise the referendum commission of Mudon Township came to Yaungdoung village yesterday to campaign among people to support the ensuing referendum in May.
 
The commission members said the government will hold the constitutional referendum in May and if people support the constitution they have to mark (–) and if they are against it then have to put a cross mark.
 
"According to one of the commission members we must support the constitution. If we do not support it, the election will be delayed by another decade," said a participant.
 
"The commission has no business saying whether we must support or go against the constitution. They must be neutral between the people and the government" said the participant.
 
The commission did not reveal the contents of the constitution and most people have no idea of the constitutional referendum, he said.
 
"I am going to go against the referendum although they said it will delay the election date. I am not trusting them and do not know whether the constitution will benefit the people or not," he added. 
 
The commission is meeting both civil servants and villagers in the villages of Yaungdong, Kwan-hlar and Hnee-padaw but most villagers did not go to listen to the referendum campaign, said the villagers.
 
About 20 people from three villages attended the referendum campaign meeting. Government civil servants from the Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA), Myanmar Women's Affairs Federation (MWAF), The Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (MMCWA) and Village Peace and Development Council (VPDC) were present.
 
The Burmese junta set up a commission for a nationwide constitutional referendum at the end of last month according to the state owned media.
