I want to be a useful MP for the public

Salai Kyaw Moe Tun, Chin World — “If I become an MP, the public can use me. Only then will I become a useful person for the region,” says U Kham Swin Mon, an Upper House candidate from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) running in Tiddim Township.

Q: What kind of proposals will you submit in the parliament for the public?

A: I’m running for the Upper House so I will be in parliament. I won’t be in the government administration. My first priority is to be active as an MP for the public, like the slogan “Parliament’s Voice, Public's Voice”.

If I were to talk about the regional situation, I believe that all round regional development is the fruit or essence of politics. Also, if I were elected in this election, my first priority would be to submi [a proposal] for the all-round development of our region. My strong desire is to develop many all-round educated Zomi youths. This is crucial for the long-term. I will submit it for either the parliament or the government to give great consideration.

Q: As a candidate, what do you think are the main things the local residents need?

A: As for our region, if we were to talk about Tiddim Township, in order for a country or region to develop, what they need for the time being is roads and communication [infrastructure]. Our region has slow development due to roads and communication difficulties. The most important thing is to close the gap between the living standards of the rural area residents and the urban residents. I believe roads and communications are essential in order not to have this gap. So, I will make the development of the rural area residents a first priority. The second priority is that nearly every village need health departments and teachers in the schools. The teachers also need homes to live in. I’m keen to carry out this development. Purified water is also essential.

Q: What percentage does the USDP expect to win in all the constituencies it is running in? What is the reason why voters should give more votes to your party rather than other parties?

A: Among eight parties running in Tiddim Township, only two parties can be active on a nationwide scale. The National Unity Party can’t do as much. So, I think we can receive 30 percent of the votes. I can say this because people have better political visions now than back in 2010 so I have heard them say that the USDP must win. Also, the USDP candidates are running in the election with the innate nature to work for the public. I believe we will be more successful than other parties since the public depends more on the USDP than back in 2010.

Q: What challenges do you face in campaigning?

A: At the moment, I have traveled to many areas for my campaign. I still haven’t visited all the places. One thing is that I don't have enough time to give. Also, there’s only a month left so I aim to visit all the villages. The challenge in traveling to the villages are the bad roads and communication such as broken bridges and a lack of roads, which were caused by the natural disaster. So, I have to travel by motorcycle or on foot.

Q: What capabilities do you have compared to your competitors if you become an MP?

A: I have submitted 50 topics for health, education, and regional development for Chin State within four and half years of my term. I have to submit about 60 topics as I have to submit some of them over and over again. My advantage is that I have a high spirit to work for the state’s benefit. If an official from the village or ward asked me, I have the duty to submit it whether it is approved or not. I truly believe the USDP will win the election.

Q: What else do you want to say to the voters?

A: I want to tell them to use me if I become an MP. I have always said this from the meeting.
I’m like a sword. If nobody uses me, I will only be in the sheath. But, if the public uses me, there will be an effect so if I become an MP, use me instead of leaving me on my own.
If the public uses me, I will become a useful person for the region. I will only become an MP if I receive votes from the public so I want to make a special request to the public to join hands with me to work for regional development.
