Department Surpluses Returned to Mon State Gov’t for use in Development

State departments have returned over 1,361 million kyats (almost $1 million) of surplus funds to the state government from their 2016-2017 budget. The return was prompted by a directive from the Union government and represents the first time that surplus money has been returned, according to U Wunna Kyaw, the Mon State Minister of Planning and Finance.

Tatmadaw halts road construction project in KNU-controlled territory

The Tatmadaw has agreed to call off a road development project in Bago Region after local residents and the Karen National Union (KNU) voiced objections, and the Joint Monitoring Committee intervened. The intended road was to bisect territory controlled by the KNU’s brigade 3 in Mone town, Kyaukkyi township.
