as the list of the candidates has finally been submitted to the Union Election Commission (UEC).

Women Party Mon“We have already appointed four candidates to compete in the elections. The forms for the three candidates, who will compete in the constituencies of Thanbyuzayat, Mudon and Kyaikmayaw townships [Mon State], have already been submitted. Because we still need some more information from the fourth candidate who is contesting for Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Divison, we have not handed in the form for that candidate yet.,” said Mi Than Shin, the chairwoman of the Women’s Party (Mon).

Mi Than Shin will run for the Amyotha Hluttaw representative of Thanbyuzayat Township, while Mi Ni Ni Lwin will compete as a Amyotha Hluttaw candidate for Kyaikmayaw Township and Mi Moe Moe Khaing as a Pyithu Hluttaw candidate for Mudon Township. Mi Seik Non (aka Mi Myint Thant) will compete as a Amyotha Hluttaw candidate for Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division.

“In parliament, the number of women is very few. We want to encourage the development of the women’s sector and for women to have interest in politics,” said Mi Moe Moe Khaing, who will compete in the Mudon Township constituency as Pyithu Hluttaw candidate.

The Women’s Party (Mon) is without respective ward-level and village-level sub-offices, contains a small number of party members, and has little experience of elections. Thus, the party is lacking political expertise, according to a political observers’ analysis.

According to the UEC, in the country’s general elections, an individual party must have at least three candidates to compete in the elections.

The deadline for party candidate list submission is August 14.
