Mon State has more than 1.4 million people who are eligible to vote in the 2015 general elections, according to the Mon State Election Commission (EC).
U Hein Lin Htet, the vice-director of the Mon State EC, said there are 1,411,398 names on the voter-list. However, currently the list is incomplete.
He said: “It is [called] a basic voter-list. We will hold education workshops with civil society organizations (CSOs). We will announce the voter-list in two weeks, between 8 and 24 June. But, it is not yet complete. It will be completed if the public helps. We will only put it [the voter-list] on our website after it is completed. If your name is not on the list, you have to apply,”
Names for the voter-list were collected in four phases, with the first phase starting in December 2014
Tatmadaw [army] soldiers, policemen and their family members who are away for longer than 180 days have not yet been included on the basic voter-list.
The list of eligible voters will be displayed at 1286 places across Mon State from 8 to 24 June, so that people can check they are on the list.
In the 2010 elections, there were one million (1,000,000) eligible voters in Mon State. Also, there were mistakes with the voter-list and certain people were not able to cast a vote.
