Mon State’s Chaungzone Township Election Sub-commission has so far calculated more than 126,000 voters eligible to cast their ballots for Pyithu Hluttaw constituency in the upcoming by-election in the township.

The Chaungzone Township Election Sub-commission’s statistic, compiled from November 1 until December 30, discerns that 126,900 voters are eligible to vote in the Chaungzone Township during the by-election on April 1, 2017. However, the sub-commission hasn’t concluded gathering the data.

In the 2015 Election, although there were 127,249 eligible voters in the township, only 56,573 voters turned out to cast their ballots.

“Up to December 30, we have gathered over 125,000 eligible voters. We cannot tell the exact number of voters yet because the number will increase as the people with Form 3 and Form 4 (C ) will be also included,” said U Htun Yi, chairman of Chaungzone Township Election Sub-commission.

According to the Union Election Commission’s announcement, the Name List Form (10) containing the Hluttaw candidates can be advertised beginning January 2, while respective parties can conduct their campaigns from January 30 to May 30.

“After the district-level inspected the 5 Hluttaw candidates submitted by the respective parties, ensuring there are no objections, the submitted list of 5 candidates are sent to the Union-level [election commission],” said U Htin Kyaw, official of the Mawlamyine District Election Commission.

The National League for Democracy (NLD), the Mon National Party (MNP), the All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP), the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and the National Unity Party (NUP) will compete for Chaungzone Township’s Pyithu Hluttaw Constituency in the by-election.

The five candidates, who will compete for Pyithu Hluttaw Constituency in Chaungzone Township, are Nai Sein Mya Maung of MNP, Nai Win Htut of AMDP, U Aung Kyi Thein of USDP, U Aye Win of NLD, and U Tin Wai of NUP, according to Monday’s announcement by Union Election Commission.

There are 18 constituencies vacant for the by-election across Burma, comprised of 8 Pyithu Hluttaw constituencies, 3 Amyotha Hluttaw, and 7 Regional/State Constituencies. Of the 18 vacant constituencies, there is one vacant constituency, Pyithu Hluttaw constituency, in Chaungzone Township, Mon State.
