Bangladesh Border Guard arrests 4 aid distributors in Teknaf

Teknaf, Bangladesh: Bangladesh Border Guard  (BGB) arrested four aid distributors while holding a meeting at a house in Teknaf Upazila on July 30, said Seraz, a fisherman from Shaplapur.

The detainees are identified as--- Hafez Salaul Islam, Moulvi Ibrahim and Sayed Karim- the house owner and Ahmad Al Saleh Al Gammi – a Saudi national, Seraz said.

BGB arrested the four aid distributers while holding a meeting at a house in Shaplapur Nayapara village under Bahar Chora Union of Teknaf Upazila, according to BGB officials.

Hafez Salaul Islam built a mosque and madrasa complex named Imam Muslim Islamic Centre in Cox’s Bazar, said Abdu Salam from Cox’s Bazar.

Jahid Iqbal, assistant commissioner led BGB personnel raid and arrested the four aid distributers while sitting a secret meeting at Sayed Karim’s home in Shaplapur village, said Lt Col Abujar Al Jahid, Commander of BGB battalion-2, Teknaf said.  

The detainees were holding the meeting for disbursing aid among inhabitants of an unregistered Rohingya shelter in Teknaf without approval from local administration, the Commander  added.

The four were under the custody of the Border Guard of Bangladesh at the BGB-2 Battalion Headquarters in Teknaf where they were being quizzed by the BGB, police and intelligence personnel, a police source said.

Cox's Bazar police superintendent Shaymal Kumar Nath told The Daily Star the detainees were not handed over to the police. Police will take legal actions once the detainees were handed over to them.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Cox’s Bazar Ali Hussain said in a recently held conference in Dhaka that it is necessary to form a strong organization to monitor all NGOs and INGOs that help Rohingya community.

Previously, on 4 July, the BGB arrested seven people including five Chinese nationals on charge of unlawful distribution of funds among the residents of an unregistered Rohingya taking shelter in the Leda camp of Teknaf Upazila. Teknaf Upazila, located on the south east border of Bangladesh, is 86 km on the south of Cox's Bazar Town.
