Hpakant Residents Welcome 88 Generation Student Leaders

The 88 Generation Peace and Open Society will deliver 1,000 packs of rice and other food to war refugees in Ginsi Village-Tract in Hpakant Township, Kachin State U Mya Aye an 88 Generation leader told KNG.

The 88 Generation leaders planned to leave Mytkyina Town on 5th February to deliver the donations from the prominent abbot Sayardaw Yawainwe (Innma) and the residents of Mytkyina Town to about 2,000 refugees in Hpakant Township.

On 4th February Mya Aye said: “1,000 rice packs and cooking oil will be included. Now we are preparing and we will go on tomorrow with lorries.”

88 generation leaders U Mya Aye, U Pyone Cho, U Aung latt and U Nyan Lyin arrived in Myitkyina town on 4th February. Other leaders U Min Ko Naing, U Jimmy, Sanchaung Ko Ko Gyi and U Ko Ko Hlaing were due to arrive later before they all went to Hpakant.

The donations are for about 2,000 war refugees from Aung-Bar-Lay (Thangaung) Village in Ginsi Village-Tract who have been trapped by fighting that broke out between government forces and Kachin Independence Army (KIA) forces from battalion 6 under the command of Brigade 2 on 15th January.

Although religious leaders from Hpakant and the Peace Creation Group (PCG) have previously attempted to bring out the trapped villagers the commander of Burma Army Brigade No. 66 has not allowed them to leave, which is why the villagers have been taking shelter in Ginsi Village.

Khong Naw, a primary school teacher from Aung-Bar-Lay village said that some people from her village had run away to Nammakyit war refugee camp, which is run by the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC).

She said: “We could not live in Aung-Bar-Lay anymore so we all individually ran away to Hpakant town yesterday. There were so many difficulties, but the Hpakant religious groups helped us and we have been living in Nammakyit refugee camp since yesterday. Some students who need to sit examinations this year have stayed in Ginsi Village.”

She said that now, including the newcomers from Aung-Bar-Lay Village there are a total of about 300 refugees staying in Nammakyit refugee camp. Refugees have been living there since fighting in 2013.

Including the students from Aung-Bar-Lay Village there are about 100 war refugees in Ginsi Village.
