A report said that due to heavy rain last month nearly 8000 people have been affected by flooding in Kalaymyo, Sagaing Region.

According to the Kalaymyo Relief group the most affected areas are Nyainepinta, Aungmingala, Mingalayin, Aungmiman and Aungthisa villages. 7708 people from 30 villages had to be moved to safer areas.

Currently, five relief centers to help the people affected by the severe weather and floods have been set up in Kalaymyo by local community groups and the Kanbawza Bank.

The locals said that the flooding in Kalaymyo is some of the worst flooding since 1997.

The flood destroyed many cultivation areas and bridges.

A villager from Pintawu village said: “We had cultivated rice in the last week of July, but now it is all gone, because of the flooding.”

Many people also lost their properties to the floods. Ko Phuta said: “We lost all of our properties as our home has sunk in the flood.”
