A group of assailants killed a 32-year-old villager in Maungdaw Township this past weekend, the latest in a series of murders of local civilians.

Around 15 men in coats entered Nu Armein’s house after 3am on June 4. The men allegedly attacked the head of 100-households from Ywar Thit Kay Village with an axe before dragging him out of the house, according to a Border Guard Police official.

The victim’s brother reportedly tried to interfere and stop the attackers, but was knifed by the assailants.

The body of Nu Armein was found near an embankment in Tha Yay Kon Baung Village at 10am. State media said that his body was recovered near a prawn farm south of Ywar Thit Kay Village.

The village administrator informed officials at the Ma Gyi Chaung border outpost and the Alel Tan Kyaw border outpost. Police arrived around 7am to investigate the incident.

The victim’s brother was given medical treatment for his knife wound.

The new insurgent group, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, has been accused of leading attacks on local residents who cooperate with government officials.

However, ARSA has repeatedly taken to social media to deny the allegations, attesting that it does not target any civilians.
