Chit Min Tun — The All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMRDP)’s candidate Naing Mya Shein, who was running for a seat from Mon State in the Lower House representing Mudon Township, died after succumbing to liver cancer last Wednesday morning at his home in Kamawat town.

The 61-year-old candidate passed away ten days before the election. “He didn’t get to fulfill his wish,” said his wife Mi Soon Aung.

Naing Mya Shein’s colleague Naing Cham Ai said the candidate had not been able to campaign for most of the campaign because he had been receiving medical treatment in Yangon for his ilness.

“At first, he campaigned in two or three areas, but he couldn’t anymore as he had to receive medical treatment in Yangon,” he said.

Mi Thazin Htwe, an Upper House candidate running in Mudon Township’s Constituency No 6 from the AMRDP said his late fellow candidate was following the campaign until the very end. “He had told us at the hospital that he wanted to know who would win and lose. There are only ten days left. He didn’t get to know the answer,” he said.

Reached for comment AMRDP’s secretary Dr Min Nwe Soe said that his party will be unable to run a replacement candidate. “We won’t be able to replace him [with another candidate] as he died at this time. Please vote for the candidate who will contribute to the Mon people,” he said.

Naing Mya Shein participated in the Mon State Cultural Association, the Mudon Township Mon Literature and Cultural Association and various regional development and philanthropic activities. He was also a Mon singer, according to his close friends.  He is survived by his wife Mi Soon Aung and four children.
